As readers of my blog know, these letters are the basis of my novel. I decided on historical FICTION so I could make the story come to life in a way that was not inhibited by pure fact. When I began writing, I used the letters in their original form. I even included photos of each letter next to the transcription in each chapter. I was determined to keep them verbatim. But some letters are very dark, or ripped or even illegible—so difficult to decipher and carry the attention of the reader.
I hired an editor after completing several drafts on my own. As a first time author, I was craving feedback and needed guidance. My editor did not hold back! One of the areas we went back and forth on was whether to modify the letters to make them more compelling, descriptive and emotional—as well as easier to read and understand. In the end, I agreed and did add some language and enhance some descriptions in the letters. I wanted to paint a strong emotional portrait of Florence and describe the atmosphere on the Virginia battlefields. They make for a better historical FICTION novel. However, they are not exact. No material changes were made and each letter stays true to the original.
For those interested in the precise history there are several images of the original letters on this website under About the Letters. I will add more in the coming weeks.
Thanks to all who have read my book. I hope you enjoyed the story honoring my great, great grandparents Florence and Ellen Burke
